Andrew McCarthy: Travel Writer Extraordinaire?
Last evening, right here in New York at the monthly Restless Legs Reading Series, Don George presented his new book (just in time for the holiday season he noted!), “A Moveable Feast,” a Lonely Planet-issued anthology of foods-centric travel stories curated by Mr. George himself. Soon after a brief introduction at the mic, Don announced that the very first reader of the night would be an Andrew McCarthy reading his submission, “The Most effective Meal I Ever Had.”
Andrew McCarthy . . . Andrew McCarthy, why did I realize this identify? I leaned above to my buddy Jude. “Why do I know that identify?”
“You know,” she whispered, “from ‘St. Elmo’s Fire,’ ‘Pretty in Pink,’ ‘Mannequin’ and ‘Weekend at Bernie’s.'”
Ahhh, that’s correct, I thought it sounded acquainted.
Very well, turns out, in spite of my delusion that I had a quite fantastic grasp of the travel creating planet, Mr. McCarthy has wholly flown under my radar, in spite of the truth that, as I discovered various Google searches later, Andrew’s been busy racking up travel articles in the last number of years for publications such as Travel+Leisure, Afar, Men’s Journal, Islands, National Geographic Journey, The Atlantic, Bon Appetit and Slate.com. Not to mention the truth that he was a short while ago named the 2010 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year.
How he finds to do this in amongst his nevertheless active acting — and now directing — career is beyond me, but it goes to display that there actually is no far better dream occupation in the globe than that of a travel author. Okay, surf instructor is likely very first, but travel writer is a close 2nd.
